Dámaso Escauriaza house

This house was built by architect Leonardo Rucabado in 1909 for Dámaso Escauriaza Legorburu and Manuela Landecho de la Quadra Salcedo. She had inherited the land, called “Solar de Echenagusia”, from her grandfather, who was one of the founders of Banco de Bilbao. Her husband, one of the founders of Banco de Vizcaya, was also a wealthy man and got involved in social activities, becoming president of the “Sociedad Bilbaína” private club in 1914.

The house was one of the largest in Bilbao at that time. It had a marble column at the entrance, a river in the garden and a private cycle track wich Mr. Escauriaza probably used for his cars. Driving a Bugatti, we won a known competition in the twenties. Its chapel hosted in 1919 one of the weddings of the year in Spain: that of the owners’ daughter, Lolita Escauriaza, with Felipe de Cubas y Urquijo, son of the marquis of Cubas.

The family split its inheritance and could not keep the house, wich was sold to a religious organization in 1951 and finally demolished later on. Apartament buildings and a religious school (“La Pureza”) were built in its place. Unfortunately this house is not there any more and you can only see it in old pictures, as the ones from the first football players in the old San Mamés stadium.
